Celebrate Our History!

Opening Reception for the Main Library 50th Anniversary Exhibit, Wednesday July 25, 2007: 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm -- Main Library Multi-Purpose Room.

All are invited to an opening reception for the Main Library 50th Anniversary Exhibit. The reception will honor past and current staff, Boards of Directors, Friends of the HCL and the public for their support during the half-century of the Library's existence. Enjoy light refreshments and the music of classical guitarists as you view this historical exhibit, on display in the lower level display cases from July 18 - August 30. Celebrate our history!

Using archival photographs, Library memorabilia and historical text, this exhibit, created by HCL staff, highlights the changes the Main Library has undergone during its half-century history. Milestones are displayed decade by decade in this special exhibit, from the construction of the Downtown location, through two major building renovations, the introduction of personal computers and the Internet, to the current branch expansion program. The Blood of Flowers is a novel just released from Iranian-American author, Anita Amirrezvani. The story is the tale of a young girl in 17th century Iran. Following her father's untimely death, the unnamed narrator and her mother travel to the fabled city of Isfahan to stay with the family of a distant relative who is a master carpetmaker to Shah Abbas. The girl is fascinated by the colors and patterns of the carpets, but when she is forced into a shameful temporary marriage, her dreams of creating her own carpets seem as distant as the moon. This beautifully written novel weaves a tale of the unnamed Persian carpetmakers through one girl's struggle to survive and thrive both as a woman and as a carpetmaker in her own right.
